『We will aim to move people profoundly』

I want to share a song that recently moved me profoundly.

It's a pop song from China intended to address a societal problem and it’s effective because it combines meaning, technique, and creativity. In specific, it's a song protesting violence against women, and it doesn't just say "violence is bad," it asks the more complex question of how general society sees these women, how much people care, and if we perceive victims of violence as individual human beings. For example, in certain cases, in China, the news prints the names of victims with an alias, "Xiao Juan." This is used as the name of the song. The song asks, "are you recognizing us Xiao Juans as individual people?"

This is a smart approach to affecting society, because, as an artist, you may not have direct access to do something like change laws, but you can do things like affect peoples perceptions. At YTJ, we are not pop singers, we are people who do musicals and stuff with/for children and youth, but we too can think about combining meaning, technique, and creativity to create something that moves people profoundly, affects perceptions, and has an influence on society, however small.

And so I share this song as an example for us, as artists, to learn from the efforts of another artist in this area.

最近ある曲を聞いて予測を超えて感動しました。
中国のアーティストのポプの曲です。
ポプソングと言えば、どんな感情とか内容のイメージのでしょうか？
多分、「楽しい」とか「ラブソング」とかのイメージが多いかもしれないですが、
この曲はだいぶ違って、すごい真剣な社会の問題についての曲です。

僕が大事な意味を伝わっている芸術が好きで、
この曲は大事な意味があって好きです。
しかし、「意味がある」と言うことだけ十分だと思いません。
例えば、真剣な社会問題についての曲でも、
すごい下手であまり誰も聞きたくない歌だったら、
あまり役に立たないかもしれないと思いますね。
感動を生み出すために、３つのことが必要かもしれないと思います。
１）意味
２）テクニック（技能）
３）クリエーティビティー（想像力、独創性）

この曲の場合、
意味：女性に対する暴力を反対する曲です
テクニーク：素敵なメロディー、リズム、歌い方、シンガーの表現、パフォーマンス、など
クリエティビティー：この曲は「暴力はだめ」と言うことだけではなくて、
もっと深い質問を社会にしています。
例えば、暴力を受けた人がどんなように社会に認められますか？
一人一人、ちゃんと個性がある人間として認められていますか？
どれぐらい一般の社会が関心を持っていますか？
など

中国で、新聞の記事で、こんなような暴力の被害者の本当の名前ではなくて、
「山田太郎」みたいな仮名を使っているそうです。
「小娟」（「シャオ・ジュアン」、多分) と言う名前だそうです。
それも曲の名前です。
「私たちの小娟たちのことを一人一人の人間として見ていますか？」
を聞いている曲です。

社会に影響を与えようとしたら
さまざまな方法があると思います。

アーティストだったら、
法律を直接に変えないかもしれないですが、
人の認め方、そして人の考え方を少しでも
影響できるのではないかと思います。

私たちは
大人のためのポップソングではなくて、子供と若者のためのミュージカルなどを
作成するアーティストですが
私たちも意味、テクニックとクリエーティビティーを合わせたら、
予測を超えた感動を生み出して、
少しでも人に影響を与える力があるのではないかと思います。
